Watch, Read, Listen!

I haven't done one of these for a while, and I love reading other people's...so
here are my latest media loves!

Watch:

Our latest Redbox rental was: The Way Way Back, which I liked!  I love Sam Rockwell, and he plays a great role in it--so I enjoyed it.  The movie is a little sad throughout but has a good ending.  It is a teenage summer/family drama.
Also, I have watched this sketch a lot lately--so funny! (Be careful clicking on any other Key and Peele clips, though, as some are really vulgar.)

Read:

I jumped on the bandwagon and read Divergent.  I loved it.  I was sad when it ended.  I watched the movie trailer like 5 times.  I started the second book the next day. It is your very-popular violent-female-protagonist-in-a-dystopian-society teen fiction.  Such good brain junk food!  And, I thought, much better than the Hunger Games.

Listen:

I really like cover songs, and this one by the Gregory Brothers is my favorite lately:

Plus, it is done by brothers, which is awesome!
On a side note, Quincy's favorite song lately is Shakira's Waka Waka, which is equally awesome but is getting less and less awesome the more I am begged to play it.

This Made My Day!

My friend sent me this video, and it made my day! What a way to use your talents and have fun doing it! I love how the girl on the intercom gets such a kick out of it, too. Enjoy!

Listen

Yes, I have erased the watch and read part of this post, because what I originally suggested was not appropriate. The book, Beatrice and Virgil, was good for about a hundred pages or so and then turned really ugly at the end. And the movie, well, let's just say sometimes I like things that might be grossly offensive to other people. Sorry!

Listen:

I love the Noisettes, and I love how they covered the Killer's "When You Were Young". It is so beautiful (and much better than the orginal, in my opinion). I can listen to this song all day long! Isn't the lead singer so gorgeous, too? Just beautiful!

Enjoy! Anyone seen or heard anything great lately?

For the Mamas!

Happy Mother's Day! I get to talk in church--aren't you jealous? My hubby has to talk, too, so that makes me feel better. But then he has to work right after, so no Mother's Day break for me! Oh well.
Anyways, we are big fans of Hilary Weeks's music in this house. She lived in Fox's mission area, and he became a huge fan and has several of her CDs, which I have come to love.

Here is a little ditty she did that is definitely good to play to anyone who has ever asked, "What does a stay-at-home mom do?"

This always make me smile!

And so does my Mama! I still can't believe she had 6 children under the age of 8 and no TV. She amazes me. I love you, Mom!

In or Out?

My hubby usually works as a waiter on weekends. While he works until midnight, I usually catch up on my girly shows or birth documentaries. Last Friday, however, I just sat and watched random clips of Man Stroke Woman, a British sketch comedy show, on YouTube. BBC comedies, like the original Office, are notoriously vulgar, so I wouldn't watch some of them. But most of them are hilarious! I laughed so hard, and when Fox came home (in his nice little waiter's uniform with a tucked in shirt), I showed him this one. Heehee...

A Clip to Make You Cry

...or at least a short video clip to make ME cry! But I get to blame it on the pregnancy hormones!

How amazing is this? After not seeing Christian for 9 months, Ace and John visited him. The night before, Christian, his "wife", and his cubs all parked themselves on a rock outside the camp and waited for them. At the end of the video, they all walk off together. They ended up hanging out at the camp until late at night, when Christian returned to his cubs.

A Beautiful Chorus

I spend so much time teaching the alphabet to my students that the song is almost annoying. Luckily, I found this version, which has restored my faith in the ABCs. This is Kermit, featuring the amazing Ladysmith Black Mambazo. N-joy!

Dancey Dance Time!

I love Dancey Dance Time on Yo Gabba Gabba! My baby, part of the target audience, could care less. What is Yo Gabba Gabba? It's Teletubbies on drugs! It's a show on Nick Jr. that was created by Christian Jacobs, one of the LDS members of the Aquabats. The show is insanely colorful and quite kooky. It features a DJ, some monsters, and guest celebrities teaching dance moves.
Here is my favorite Dancey Dance Time, with Elijah Wood. I don't know if I should be amused or disturbed...

Ode to High School French

You know you took high school French! If you're cool, you took it. Anyways, I present to you a music video that actually uses that high school French you never thought you'd use, featuring Flight of the Conchords, my latest obsession. They are hilarious, and hubby and I can't stop watching them (thanks alot, Brenden!). So, without further ado, I present "Foux de Fa Fa":

The Business of Birth

Disclaimer: If you are pregnant and reading this, do not freak out about hospitals if you choose to watch these trailers. Be informed and assertive about what you want for your birth! You can make it happen!

I know this blog is dedicated to things that make me happy, and birth is serious business. However, I was recently directed to the Pregnant in America website by a doula friend of mine. The film was made by a first time dad-to-be with no film experience who wanted to document his wife's journey and their quest for prenatal care in America. It turns out that the U.S. has the second worst newborn death rate in the modern world. The movie rails against hospitals, but in the end, the director's daughter couldn't have survived without hospital intervention. What makes me happy is that this movie features the amazing Ina May Gaskin, one of America's greatest midwives, and Kerrie Tuschoff, the founder of Hypnobabies.

What makes me even MORE happy is The Business of Being Born, a documentary also examining hospital and homebirths and featuring Ricki Lake giving birth at home. This one seems to be a little more uplifting. Both movies should be released at select theaters sometime next year.

Just a side note: I'm very very supportive of homebirth and plan on doing it someday. However, I did have an amazing natural childbirth in a hospital with a supportive certified nurse midwife. My only complaint about my hospital birth was that I got a measly peanut butter sandwich after all that hard work!
Here is a great website about planning on a natural birth, for the many women I know who are expecting: Ten Tips for a Natural Birth.
